Colour as used in different forms of treatment, mainstream and alternative

Today the ancient art of colour therapy is becoming more and more popular since people live stressfully and wish to achieve a balance to the body and the mind. The different forms of colour healing techniques and tools play an intimate role in modern human life providing a way to harmony and health. Even the official medicine is using colours in hospital environments and some maternity units to help relive the pain and for the calming effect, hospitals dealing with emotionally disturbed people benefit from a right shade of blue. The study of colour psychology is in the hands of eminent psychologists and psychiatrists, great advances have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of certain mental conditions through colour.

In the early 20th century the mainstream medicine led the scientific exploration concerning the aspects of colour to a new foundation. Physician Dr. D.P. Ghadiale began healing with different coloured lights, colour projection process nowadays known as chromotherapy and in 1903 the danish physician N. Finsen was Nobel awarded for his work using both sunlight and artificial ultraviolet light in healing disease. Since the year 1925 Dr. M. Hauschka began to study the affects of art in her patients and in the next 40 years art therapy was developed, therapy where colour plays an important role when approaching people and their symptoms. Many studies have been carried out over the years to find out the secrets of colour theory and therapy and the medical research continues.

Besides the western tradition, alternative medicine like Chinese medicine, acupuncture, Ayurveda and homeopathy correspond for example the colour of the skin, tongue or eyes to the glands, organs and other parts of the body when treatment and relieves for physical ailments are manifested. These and many other alternative therapies approach human body in a holistic way, healing the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of the self. This marks the difference between conventional western medicine and other systems of healing. The old scientific beliefs of relating to health purely in terms of the visible is being supersede by an appreciation of the thoughts and the mind, they precede and affect the physical matter. Alternative eastern healing techniques work on all bodily levels, seeing the body’s energetic nature through seven colored energy centers known as the chakras. A balance between these centers is necessary for good health.

The main chakra system with the seven moderators of subtle energy is positioned from the base of the spine up to the crown of the head. Each of these chakras deal with various parts of a bigger picture, resonating at different frequencies and corresponding to the colours of the rainbow. The chakras are often described as interconnecting and rotating wheels of energy and when all seven are spinning in harmony, the system runs smoothly. When chakra spins too fast or not at all, there are many methods to bring them back into equilibrium: meditating with colour, breathing colours, crystal healing, coloured candle healing, affirmations, chord therapy and physical Yoga exercises.

Astrologers, Reiki practitioners, reflexologists and aromatherapists also who integrate an understanding of the chakras and the relating colours into their work enhance the physical and spiritual well being. Essential oils in aromatherapy are potent and natural substances which comprise various physical components. There is often a link between the colour of the oil or flower and the sevenfold chakra system. When applied to the skin through massage these essences enter the bloodstream and the vibrational healing effect touches all bodily functions. With the aromatic scent stimulating the nervous system the oils interact with our own energies, maintaining the balance in our moods, emotions and the chakras.

Besides the extracts of aromatic plants, flowers represent the power of colour in many other ways. The flowers taken to someone in hospital are extremely important treatment, one can design gardens specifically for healing, Bach flower remedies can be used for balancing the emotional body and a floral healing bath is a particularly beautiful way to infuse colour. On a physical level different coloured herbs, fruits and vegetables are essential food, containing specific nutrients for the whole human organism and even to animals, the color intake through their food is more limited in its colour range than humans, but just as necessary. The idea of colour healing for animals is evolving in the world of animal care and there are indications of their receptivity to colour.

The health of an animal or a person can be judged on the purity of the colours in their aura, an bio-electromagnetic field surrounding the body. In esoteric terms the aura is a resonating energy field of luminous coloured light that penetrates and radiates out of the physical body from between a few centimeters to a meter or more. Healers who can interpret the colours of the aura, hold the key to a person’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual states. The word ”aura” means light and in the colour therapy called Aura-Soma, ”soma” meaning the living energies, there are currently 106 dual coloured bottles filled with herbal extracts, essential oils, gems and crystals which are remarkable useful in readings and treatments. This non-intrusive and self selective colour care system is embracing people from all over the world. Far from the ancient knowledge Aura-Soma and colour indicates an interesting mystery for the future.
